What is sales tax?

Deals Duty Is An Expense On The Offer Of Labor and products. In the United States and the District of Columbia, all states except Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, and Oregon impose a state sales tax when you purchase goods or pay for services. However, Alaska, like many other states, does impose a local sales tax.

Some states may not impose sales tax on certain categories of items. For example, Massachusetts has no sales tax on regular groceries. Many states also impose additional taxes. In the cordiality business, it is normal for cafés and lodgings to charge a duty rate higher than the state deals charge. Contact your state and local government for estimated sales tax rates and any additional taxes that may apply.

How to calculate sales tax

Multiply the price of the product or service by the tax rate. If the tax rate is a percentage, divide this number by 100 to get the tax rate as a decimal. Then use this number for multiplication.

  • Determine the list price and tax rate.
  • Divide the tax rate by 100 to get the tax rate as a decimal.
  • Multiply the list price by the tax rate as a decimal to get the tax amount.

Add the tax amount to the list price to get the tax amount.

Total Price
Let’s say you are buying a new coffee machine for your kitchen. The coffeemaker costs $70 and your state sales tax is 6.5%.
The list price is $70 and the tax rate is 6.5D44. Divide the tax rate by 100: 6.5 / 100 = 0.065.

Multiply the price by the decimal tax rate: 70 * 0.065 = 4.55. You pay $4.55 in tax on each $70 worth of item.
Add tax to the list price to get the total price: 70 + 4.55 = $74.55

Sales Tax Formula

  • Sales Tax Rate = Sales Tax Percentage / 100
Sales Tax = List Price * Sales Tax Rate
Total Price Including Tax = List Price + Sales Tax or
Total Price Including Tax = List Price + (List Price * Sales Tax Rate) or
Total Price Including Tax = List Price * (1 + Sales Tax Rate)
